Boxy Fit Woe Isn't Me
There's this great thing someone taught my kids. Then my kids taught it to me:
Instead of saying "I'm sad," try saying, "I feel sad, or "I have sadness." Or even better, "there is sadness."
In changing the language just that little bit, we can stop attaching our identity to our emotions.
It doesn't prevent emotions from happening. But it gives us a little distance so we can recognize them for what they are — something that passes like the weather, only temporarily obscuring the clear, sunny skies.
Woe isn't me. And it ain't you, either.
